Why We Charge a Non-Refundable Application Fee
Approximately 175 Washburn University students study abroad annually and, although we are a small office, we have major responsibilities for ensuring students have rewarding and safe experiences. We are aware of the variety of study abroad options available to them and understand their needs and wants and what the various programs are able to provide. As a consequence, the staff of the Office of International Programs (OIP) spends considerable time and energy promoting study abroad, working with students to select the most appropriate program, and preparing the students for their experience abroad. In addition, student's applications are processed in our office, and budget information is provided to the Student Financial Aid Office in order that financial aid can be appropriately applied. We work with the WU Business Office to process program payments through the student's WU acount. We also work with the Registrar's Office and other offices across campus to evaluate and award credit transfer from foreign institutions. Credit earned abroad and recorded on transcripts from foreign institutions is evaluated and awarded transfer credit by Washburn University. Finally, the OIP staff are available to handle emergency situations. Our goal is to be fair and reasonable and, to that extent, we research the fees charged by our peer institutions to be sure that our fees are in line with those charged by other institutions.
All Washburn University undergraduate study abroad programs include a comprehensive international health and emergency service plan. The plan is through T.W. Lord Insurance Company. Study abroad students are automatically enrolled. The cost is either included in the non-refundable administrative fee or charged separately depending on the length of the program. Non-Washburn students, community/auditing members who participate in a WU study abroad program are assessed a non-refundable $200.00 fee.
Upon submitting the online Study Abroad Admissions and Scholarship Application, a non-refundable fee will be placed on your Washburn Student Account. Fees will vary depending on your application type, see below. Payments can be made in the WU Business office or online through your IBOD account.

Washburn University Exchange Programs
For WU Exchange programs, WU tuition and fees are place on the WU student account. Tuition is assessed at the usual full-time rate in accordance with differencial tuition rates, in-state or out-of-state. A non-refundable study abroad application fee of $75 also appears as a separate item on the WU student account. WU Study Abroad Insurance also appears as a separate item on the WU student account. The amount of the insurance fee varies and is based on the length of the program. WU registration for the term is a full-time placeholder registration. Specific courses and credits will be transferred to the WU transcript and permanent record from the host institution transcript following completion of the term.

Summer WU Faculty-led Group Programs
For summer faculty-led group programs, students are registered in established WU courses and are assessed WU tuition accordingly. A separate study abroad program fee is placed on the WU student account. The program fee includes the program costs. The study abroad insurance and non-refundable application fee charges will appear as separate items on the WU student account. Program fees and insurance cost will vary based on the length of the program.
Fall Break, Winter Break, or Spring Break WU Faculty-led Programs
Fall, Winter, and Spring Break programs may consist of a short term international experience that is a component of a regular WU on-campus semester course. A separate study abroad program fee is placed on the WU student account. The program fee includes the program costs. The study abroad insurance and non-refundable application fee will appear as a separate item on the WU student’s account. Program fees and insurance cost will vary based on the length of the program.
Students studying abroad through other providers (institutions or agencies) or through direct enrollment in a foreign institution are considered to be on Non-WU study abroad programs. Students on Non-WU programs are not assessed WU tuition fees. WU registration for the term is a full-time placeholder registration in the appropriate interdisciplinary studies course. Specific courses and credits are transferred to the WU transcript and permanent record from the host institution transcript following completion of the term.
Request for Withdrawal
Requests for withdrawal from a program in the Bods Abroad application website must be made in writing to the Office of International Programs. The date of withdrawal is the date that such written notification is received by the OIP. The OIP will consider a waiver of the non-refundable application fee on appeal for extenuating circumstances. Fees will vary depending on program type and may include the non-refundable application fee and/or deposits made in advance of the program.
